Greenfield Village is Lovely in December!

Greenfield Village is Lovely in December!

Although it's not really known as a winter vacation paradise, my vote for a great Michigan winter getaway is the wonderful Henry Ford complex in Dearborn, Michigan.

No, it doesn't have cross-country skiing or other seasonal activities, but it has one of the richest and most diverse collections of exhibits and programs representing American ingenuity. My specific favorite is Greenfield Village, a 90-acre tract that brings American history to life with it's historic districts, themed itineraries and historic rides in transportation modes of yesterday.

Also part of the complex is the Henry Ford Museum, the Ford Rouge Factory, Imax Theater and Benson Ford Research Center. Everything, except Greenfield Village, is open all year.

Greenfield Village is closed between January 1 and mid-April, but the best time to visit Greenfield Village is in December, when it gets dressed up and decorated for the Christmas holidays.

I would recommend a family visit to the Henry Ford complex in December, which is the month that I visited a few years ago.

It was an unforgettable trip, as my family and I were transported back in history to experience what it must have been like for our great American forefathers as they pondered their great inventions or worked on solving world problems. T

here are 83 original structures in Greenfield Village -- moved there from locations all over the United States (and a few from Europe). It was thrilling to walk into Thomas Edison's Menlo Park laboratory and imagine what it was like for him to work on his great inventions. The actual courthouse where Abraham Lincoln practiced law is part of the Greenfield Village landscape, as is the original homestead of Henry Ford and the bicycle shop that the Wright Brothers operated.

Visiting Greenfield Village and the rest of the Henry Ford complex in December provides leisurely opportunities to experience this unique look at American history when crowds are at a minimum. Children have ample opportunities to examine the cars, trains, carriages and other exhibits in the museum, without being forced to hurry along. Greenfield Village is decorated in Christmas finery and everyone is filled with holiday cheer.

Yes, it may be a little chilly and there may even be snow on the ground. But you can always retreat back to your cozy bed & breakfast after a day of touring, or find a delicious meal at one of the local eateries.

This is perhaps an unorthodox suggestion, but a trip to The Henry Ford complex in the winter months is well worth your consideration!
