Camping in Michigan is one of the top family vacation choices for a lot of reasons...simple, affordable and, most of all, FUN!
Ready to go?
Michigan has some of the best campgrounds in the country. You can “rough it” in a tent or even rent a cabin with showers and air-conditioning.
When camping in Michigan...it is all up to you!
Our all-time favorite camp ground is P.J. Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon, Michigan.
This beautiful state park has 1,100 acres of tree covered sand dunes and 3 miles of Lake Michigan beach. Some of the 293 campsites seem almost secluded in the wooded valley, but are only a short hike to one of the most beautiful beaches around. It is so awesome to look out into Lake Michigan and see only water and turn around and see only trees and sand covered dunes! Truly a remarkable and family-friendly beach!
There are also places for biking, picnicking, swimming, and miles and miles of marked hiking trails. A favorite attraction is the Dune Climb Stairway leading to the top of a high sand dune. At the very top there is an observation deck that offers a fabulous panoramic view of the dunes and Lake Michigan.
There is also a Visitor Center for fun, education and information about Michigan dune ecology.
Our favorite way to visit Mackinac Island and the surrounding areas is to stay at Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground. It is located just 5 Minutes from Fort Michilimackinac and Mackinac Island Ferry Docks. Once here you are also only an hour drive to Tahquamenon Falls, and the Soo Locks.
You don’t even have to own a camper or a tent!
They rent everything from ICOPODs to rustic cabins to some really nice cabins with small refrigerators, microwaves, bathrooms and spectacular views of the Mackinac Bridge!

Our kids love to ride bikes along the one-mile of beautiful shoreline, play on the playground equipment, swim in the heated pool and even stop by the arcade if it happens to rain!

When camping in Michigan, the winner for the most beautiful scenery is definitely Tahquamenon Falls State Park. The amazing waterfalls are a must see when you are making your vacation plans.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park has approximately 40,000 acres (over 13 miles) of mostly undeveloped woodland. The highlight of the park is the Tahquamenon River with its waterfalls.
You can enjoy all the spectacular sites at one of their four campgrounds in the park. Two modern campgrounds are located in the Lower Falls area and a modern and rustic campground are located at the mouth of the river. During the summer, the park has special free programs and offers guided hikes during the week for campers to enjoy.
In addition, you can enjoy activities such as hiking, backpacking, fishing, canoing, photography birding, fishing, sight-seeing and more. You may even see a black bear, whitetail deer, moose, and other amazing wildlife on your Michigan camping trip.
At the end of the day, don’t forget to visit the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub located within the State Park at the Upper Falls. You can enjoy fine dining and a Michigan micro brewed beer!
